Specialists cope with rare species preservation in Khakasia

Experts from all over Russia came to the Academic and Research Conference on the problems of rare and endangered species of animals’ conservation to Sayano-Shushensky Reserve. The experts discussed the main and newest methods, approaches and strategies for studying and conserving rare Russian mammals: the Amur tiger, Far Eastern leopard, polar bear, manul and snow leopard.

The event was held in Khakassia in the framework of the IV International Forum “Historical and Cultural Heritage as a Factor of Socio-Cultural Development". The main organizers of the scientific event were the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, the Russian Geographical Society and the Government of the Republic of Khakassia.

Compared with last year, the forum has expanded the heritage component, paying special attention to the problems of preserving the country's natural heritage:

"I consider it logical and correct that this year special attention will be given to the academic and research conference "Natural heritage of Russia. Preservation of rare and endangered species", because our common goal is to preserve the majestic nature of Russia for future generations of our citizens. And to do that we need a dialogue," - said President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergei Shoigu in his keynote speech.

Participants of the conference actualized the preservation of endangered mammals in Russia. Most of them live only in a few countries of the world and need special protection and careful study. For this purpose, scientists together with representatives of government, business and public organizations develop long-term environmental programs, which are subsequently implemented by public authorities with the involvement of a wide of interested people.

So, to study and preserve the population of the Amur tiger, in July 2013, the Russian Geographical Society, on the initiative of President Vladimir Putin, created the Amur Tiger Center. The implementation of the Amur Tiger Conservation Strategy in Russia will restore the habitat of the large predator within the historical boundaries and increase its number, which according to expert data, is estimated at about 450 individuals.

"In the four years since the adoption of the new edition of the Amur Tiger Conservation Strategy, a lot has been done. However, it is too early to talk about creating an effective state system for the conservation and use of wildlife. It is gratifying that the measures aimed at preserving the tiger population favorably affect other rare species and subspecies. For example, tougher punishment for killing a tiger has entailed increased amenability for poachers and "traders" of snow leopards, polar bears, leopards and other animals. In this sense, the tiger is a prime mover and a pioneer, "said Sergei Aramilev, Director of Primorsky branch of the Amur Tiger Center in his report.

During the meeting, the participants repeatedly noted that positive results in the conservation of rare species were achieved due to the unification of efforts in all areas of activity, namely, a scientific approach to the organization of the conservation, tougher amiability for violations of environmental legislation and environmental education.

After the leading experts presented their reports on nature preservation and discussed the issues, the participants formed a resolution of the conference.

"The experts agreed that the primary task is to develop an effective system of hunting supervision, specially protected natural areas and measures aimed at resolving conflict situations arising between rare predators and humans. I hope that the resolution of the meeting will help implement measures to protect rare species more actively," said Aramilev.
