Amur tigress caught in Khabarovsk Krai

The 12-15 month old female tiger was caught at an apiary in Nanai territory. The tigress is now in a rehabilitation center and will stay there at least until May. In spite of no injuries the tigress needs to grow up a little to be able to hunt large ungulates.

The trapping was done by anti-hunting police officers of the Department of Game Management of the Khabarovsk Kray government and supported by the Amur Tiger Center.

It is possible to say that the tigress caught herself to some extent. In an apiary in Nanai district she climbed into an empty dog enclosure and accidentally closed it by hitting the door, which opens inwards only one way.

Once trapped, the predator became nervous, broke the kennels and, without freeing herself, went to sleep. The beekeeper stayed inside the enclosure the whole time the raptor was there.

Specialists arrived on the scene, immobilized the tigress, examined her and transported her to the «Utes» rehabilitation center. The predator has no external injuries, but she is exhausted and needs to gain strength.

She will stay at the rehabilitation center until at least May. Firstly, during this time she will grow up a little and it will be easier for her to find large ungulates on her own. Secondly, by that time small animals such as badgers and raccoon dogs will be released from hibernation, which will make life in the taiga easier for the predator.

During her stay at the rehabilitation center specialists will monitor the tigress' health and behavior. All expenses concerning the young tiger's upkeep and rehabilitation will be covered by the Amur Tiger Center.

At the same time, the experts are trying to find out what had happened to the young tigress' mother and whether there were any cubs in her litter.
