Amur tiger killed in Khabarovsk Krai

In the Lazo region of the Khabarovsk Krai, a dead young male Amur tiger was found with signs of violent death. The death occurred after a meeting with the hunter last Saturday.

One of the residents of the village of Durmin of the Khabarovsk Krai hunted with dogs in the headwaters of the Olkhovy and Bezymyanny, where the fatal encounter with the tiger happened. As a result of the accident, the Amur tiger died, and the hunter injured his legs and arms and was taken to hospital. According to him, he used weapons for self-defense when the tiger attacked him.

The site of the fight has been thoroughly investigated by the staff of the hunting committee of the Khabarovsk Krai, the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Khabarovsk Krai and the Amur Tiger Center. The true picture of the events that caused the death of the tiger will be established during a comparison of the scheme of the scene of the incident, the testimony of a resident of Durmin and the results of the autopsy and subsequent examination, which will be held on November 2, 2015.

“Before conducting a comprehensive investigation, it’s premature to talk about who is to blame for what happened.  Therefore, it is not necessary to "label".  As we know, a tiger almost never attacks a person for no reason.  There were cases when people deliberately shot at a tiger for the purpose of its prey, and after that they gave out their actions as self-defense.  For example, it was in 2010 in the Khasansky district of Primorsky Krai.  Then the situational and other examinations were able to establish that the man first mortally wounded a tiger, and only then the beast attacked him.  On the other hand, in 2012 in the Vaninsky district of the Khabarovsk Krai, a hunter at the base was forced to kill a tiger. As the examination later established, the tiger was previously wounded from firearms by unknown persons, which was the reason for its appearance near the home and aggressive behavior towards the person,” commented Sergey Aramilev, director of the Amur Tiger Primorsky branch.

If it is established that the hunter deliberately killed the tiger, and invented a version about self-defense, for example, to evade responsibility, then in this case a criminal case would be initiated against him under art.  258.1 of the Criminal Code.  Recall that for the murder of the Amur tiger, in addition to criminal liability, it is also provided for compensation of damage caused to nature in the amount of 1.1 million rubles without taking into account the inflation rate.
