Last weekend, an Amur tiger and a hunter met in the south of the Khasansky district of Primorsky Krai. As a result of the incident, both the man and the predator survived, but were injured of varying degrees of severity. The causes and circumstances of the incident are clarified by the specialists of the conflict resolution team of the hunting supervision department and the police.
On Saturday, November 21, a tiger attacked one of its participants as a result of collective (“driven”) hunting of ungulates on the territory of the Swan hunting farm. When examining the scene of the incident, experts found the liner, as well as traces of blood.
According to the victim, the predator suddenly appeared at a close distance in front of him and attacked. As a result, he suffered a hand injury and other damage that does not threaten the life of a hunter. After a brief struggle, the predator left, and the hunter made a shot, he said, into the air, being in a state of shock. As it was in fact, the specialists of the hunting and police officers working at the scene will establish.
“It is good that after the meeting with the tiger the hunter remained alive. According to the data that we have, the most serious injury that a hunter received was a hand injury. The nature of the injury of the tiger itself, how it was received and how dangerous it is - remains to be seen. Apparently, the tiger had every reason for such behavior. The tiger was inside the "pen" during the hunt and for a long time left the "beaters" in the direction of the "shooters". At a certain moment, he probably realized that he was in a trap and, as they say, went “for a breakthrough,” just at the place where the victim was walking. What really provoked the tiger to attack has yet to be clarified,” said Sergey Aramilev, director of the Primorsky branch of the Amur Tiger Center.
There may be two main reasons for a tiger to attack a man in such a situation: either the tiger suddenly saw the man and took him as a threat and obstacle to “freedom”, or the person, frightened by the appearance of a tiger, fired a shot, which was the signal for “attack”. In any case, the attack of the tiger was of a demonstrative nature, as a result of which he did not set himself the goal of inflicting fatal injuries on humans. Recall that the physical strength of a healthy tiger does not leave a person any chance in cases where the tiger decided to attack with the aim of killing. At the same time, the tiger almost never attacks, unless a person provokes it.
“It can be concluded that hunters have little experience in hunting, otherwise they would understand that there is a tiger in this area and it is impossible to make a “pen”. According to our data, hunters before the “pens” discovered tiger tracks, but suggested that they are “old,” says Vladimir Vasilyev, head of the department for the protection, control and regulation of the use of wildlife in Primorsky Krai.
Reference: hunting "pen" - some hunters ("arrows") are lined up, and other hunters ("beaters") go to meet them with a cry and, as it were, "drive" them animals. This type of hunting requires serious professional skills, as it is associated with the risk of injuring, even lethal, other members of the hunt. This type of hunting is popular in the southwestern part of Primorsky Krai. Earlier there were already cases when as a result of such a hunt, first of all, because of the low level of training of hunters, tigers died, while people were injured.
